Hoshiarpur’s sporting history belongs both to international competitors and to the communities that make regular training possible. This special feature brings together athletes with documented district connections, Mahilpur’s football institutions and a recent example of village sport.
Prem Chand Degra: a world champion associated with Hoshiarpur
Prem Chand Degra won the world amateur middleweight bodybuilding title in Australia in 1988, widely remembered as his Mr Universe victory. Awarded the Padma Shri in 1990, he has a documented connection with Hoshiarpur through his gym and work encouraging fitness. His local association should not be confused with a claim that he was born in the district.

Hari Chand: the distance runner from Ghorewaha

Hari Chand, born in Ghorewaha village in Hoshiarpur district, won 10,000m gold and 5,000m bronze at the 1975 Asian Athletics Championships in Seoul. His two Asian Games gold medals came in Bangkok in 1978, in the 5,000m and 10,000m. At Montreal in 1976, his barefoot 10,000m run produced a national record of 28:48.72 that lasted 32 years. He received the Arjuna Award in 1975 and competed at two Olympics.
Manisha Kalyan: from Muggowal to European football
From Muggowal in Hoshiarpur district, Manisha Kalyan became the first Indian footballer to appear in the UEFA Women’s Champions League when she played for Apollon Ladies in a qualifying match in August 2022. Her honours include the IWL Emerging Player award for 2019–20, the AIFF Emerging Footballer award for 2020–21 and AIFF Women’s Footballer of the Year awards for 2021–22 and 2022–23. Her journey highlights both individual skill and support from family and community.
Harmilan Bains: Mahilpur’s double silver medallist
Harmilan won silver in both the women’s 800m and 1,500m at the Hangzhou Asian Games held in 2023. In September 2021, her 1,500m time of 4:05.39 broke Sunita Rani’s 19-year-old Indian record. That achievement is a historical milestone, not a claim that she still holds the record. Official Games results · AFI record report.
Balwant Singh: goals for club and country
Hoshiarpur-born forward Balwant Singh played for clubs including Mohun Bagan, Chennaiyin FC and Mumbai City FC. His milestones include becoming the first Indian scorer in the ISL and scoring both goals in India’s 2–0 win over Macau on 5 September 2017. ISL career profile · AIFF match report.
Mahilpur: education and football together
Principal Harbhajan Singh, the founding principal of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College, helped shape Mahilpur’s football tradition. The college credits his commitment to education and sport as central to its identity. The memorial football tournament began in 1962 and has become an enduring part of the town’s sporting life.
The Principal Harbhajan Singh Sporting Club describes college, collegiate-school and sub-junior teams in its programme. These distinct institutions and teams should not be collapsed into a single academy with identical facilities or admission rules.
Village sport: a documented example from Kabirpur
Punjabi Jagran reported on 25 October 2026 that Baba Manjh Sports Club organised its third two-day volleyball tournament at Kabirpur. Its account records matches involving local village teams, including Kabirpur and Kangmai. This provides a specific example of community-organised competition; it does not establish a district-wide volleyball or kabaddi league or an official scouting programme.
Training grounds and public investment
Khelo India’s official project record identifies a multipurpose hall at Smt. Lajwanti Sports Complex, Hoshiarpur, sanctioned in 2017. Historical reporting also documents residential football training in Mahilpur. These records show investment and organised training, but do not confirm today’s admissions, fees or availability of every sport.
Football Academy Baddon appears in published tournament results: it won the under-17 final against Football Academy Mahilpur in 2017. Such dated results provide a useful record of youth competition across the district.
Recognising the people behind participation
Coaches, teachers, families and tournament volunteers deserve space in Hoshiarpur’s sporting archive. Their contributions are best recorded through named programmes, dated results and first-hand accounts. Local clubs are invited to contribute their verified history, coaching details and photographs with permission to publish.
