Before Dr Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister of India, Hoshiarpur was part of his journey as a student of economics. His association with the city places it within the story of a scholar who went on to help shape modern India’s economic policy.

The Hoshiarpur connection

Following Partition, Panjab University conducted classes in Hoshiarpur. Singh studied at its University College, now associated with Government College, Hoshiarpur, and completed his master’s degree in economics in 1954.

In its report of 28 December 2024, The Tribune recalled his years in the city and reported that he later returned to teach economics there. Hoshiarpur’s connection with Singh is therefore an educational and teaching association; his birthplace was Gah in undivided Punjab, now in Pakistan.

A scholar’s journey

Born on 26 September 1932, Singh pursued economics at Cambridge, earning First Class Honours in 1957, and completed his doctorate at Oxford in 1962. His academic career included teaching at Panjab University and the Delhi School of Economics.

His 1964 book, India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth, examined India’s trade policy. Economics remained central to the public responsibilities that followed.

From economics to national leadership

Singh joined the Government of India as an economic adviser in 1971 and became Chief Economic Adviser in 1972. He subsequently held senior positions including Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

As Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, he played a major role in the economic reforms introduced during a period of severe financial difficulty. He later served two terms as Prime Minister, from 2004 to 2014. His honours included the Padma Vibhushan, awarded in 1987.
