Balwant Singh’s goals link Hoshiarpur with some of the most recognisable clubs and national-team moments in Indian football. A forward identified by Mumbai City FC as Hoshiarpur-born, he built a career across the I-League, the Indian Super League and the Indian national team.
A decisive Federation Cup performance
In January 2014, Balwant scored the opening goal as Churchill Brothers defeated Sporting Clube de Goa 3–1 in the Federation Cup final. The AIFF’s match report singled out the striker from Hoshiarpur and recorded his contribution to the club’s first title in the competition.
Club success across Indian football
The ISL’s official player biography records that Balwant became the first Indian scorer in the league, netting for Chennaiyin FC against FC Goa in 2014. He was also part of Mohun Bagan’s I-League-winning side in 2015. At Mumbai City FC in 2017–18, he scored six goals in 16 appearances.
These are historical career milestones. They show the range of his club contribution without implying that any of those teams is his present employer.
Two goals for India against Macau
On 5 September 2017, Balwant came off the bench to score both goals in India’s 2–0 away win over Macau in Asian Cup qualifying. The AIFF records a header in the 57th minute and his second goal in the 81st. It was a concrete example of a forward changing a national-team match after being introduced as a substitute.
A place in Hoshiarpur’s football archive
Balwant belongs in the district’s sporting collection for his documented local roots and achievements. His career adds a professional club and international striking story to a region already closely associated with football. For young players, the milestones make the route from local beginnings to major competitions easier to imagine.
